A great spray tan starts before you ever step into the tent. Most streaks, patches and early fading trace back to prep, so a little planning goes a long way.
24 to 48 hours before
- Shave or wax. Hair removal opens pores for a short while, so do it at least a day ahead. Waxing is best done two days before.
- Exfoliate. Use a gentle, oil-free scrub to clear away dry skin. Pay extra attention to elbows, knees, ankles and heels.
- Book nails and lashes first. Manicures, pedicures and lash appointments should come before your tan, not after.
On the day
- Shower, but skip the products. Arrive with clean, dry skin. Avoid lotion, deodorant, perfume and makeup, since they can block the solution.
- Wear loose, dark clothing. Tight waistbands and bra straps can rub off fresh color. Bring flip-flops for the ride home.
- Plan around water. Your artist will tell you when to rinse. Until then, avoid sweating, workouts and rain.
Tell your artist
Let your spray tan artist know about any skin sensitivities, allergies or the look you want. A good pro will match the solution to your skin tone and the event you are getting ready for.
Tip: For a wedding or big event, book a trial tan two to three weeks out, then your real tan one to two days before.
